A design recruitment agency built for technology companies
A portfolio looks polished, the candidate interviews well, and three months later the team discovers the work was heavily art-directed by someone else, or that the designer has never shipped inside a real product organization. VergePeople is a design recruitment agency focused on the technology and software sector, and our work is built around closing that gap between how a candidate presents and how they will actually perform on your team.
We recruit senior individual contributors, design managers, and design executives for software product companies, SaaS businesses, and the technology functions of larger enterprises across the United States. Every search is run as a structured, documented process, with a shortlist built for relevance rather than volume, and with assessment notes you can take straight into an interview debrief.
Generalist agencies and creative staffing firms often treat design as a single category. In technology companies it is not. The difference between a product designer who thrives in a discovery-led SaaS team and a visual designer suited to a marketing organization is substantial, and hiring the wrong profile costs far more than the search fee. Our recruiters work within the technology sector exclusively, which means we assess candidates against the realities of software teams: sprint cadence, cross-functional collaboration with product management and engineering, design systems thinking, and the ability to ship under real constraints.
As UX recruiters working nationwide, we support employers hiring across the design discipline, from a first senior product design hire at a scaling startup to a complete design leadership layer at an established software company. Engagements are permanent and direct hire placements, including confidential executive search for design leadership.
Design and research roles we cover
The roles below are a selection of the positions we recruit, not an exhaustive list. If you are hiring for a design or research role not shown here, contact us to discuss the search.
Product design
We place senior product designers who own end-to-end user experience work, from problem framing and user flows through to interaction and UI design, within software product teams.
Hire UX researchers
We help technology companies hire UX researchers at senior and lead level, assessed on research methodology, study design, and their record of influencing product decisions rather than simply producing reports.
UI and visual design
We recruit senior UI designers with strong user interface craft, design systems experience, and the ability to work within established brand and component libraries.
Design management
We place design managers and design leads who can run a team structure, set quality standards, and grow a coherent career path for their designers.
Head of design recruiters for leadership searches
A Head of Design or VP of Design hire shapes the function for years, and the market for proven design leadership is thin and largely passive. As head of design recruiters operating within the technology sector, we run these searches as confidential executive search engagements. That means direct outreach to sitting design leaders, careful positioning of your opportunity, and assessment that goes beyond the portfolio into org design, hiring judgment, stakeholder management, and the ability to represent design credibly at the executive level.
We work with founders and CEOs making a first design leadership hire, and with established companies replacing or restructuring an existing design function. In both cases, the early work is alignment on what the role must deliver in its first year, how it sits relative to product and engineering leadership, and what the working environment offers a senior candidate day to day.
How we assess design talent
Design assessment is where specialist recruitment earns its fee. A resume and a portfolio link tell you very little on their own. Our screening examines how a candidate works, not only what they have shipped.
Portfolio review focuses on process evidence, covering how the candidate framed the problem, what constraints they operated under, which alternatives they rejected, and what changed as a result of their work. We probe for individual contribution on collaborative projects, because the most common portfolio inflation in design hiring is claiming team output as personal craft. For UX research candidates, we examine study design, sample rigor, and how findings were communicated and acted on.
Collaboration is assessed with the same weight as craft. We explore how candidates handle disagreement with product managers and engineers, how they respond when research contradicts a stakeholder's preference, and how they operate inside a design critique culture. For leadership roles, this extends to hiring history, team development, and how they have handled underperformance on their own teams.
How a search with VergePeople works
Role scoping
We begin with a working session to define the role, the team context, the seniority calibration, and a job description that will hold up in the market.
Market mapping
We map the relevant talent pool, identify where suitable candidates currently sit, and advise on how the role is positioned against the current job market, including compensation and level expectations.
Sourcing and screening
We approach passive candidates directly, then screen for craft, process, collaboration, and motivation before anyone reaches your calendar.
Shortlist and interviews
You receive a concise shortlist with documented assessment notes, and we coordinate the interview process end to end, including candidate preparation and feedback management.
Offer and onboarding support
We manage offer negotiation, keep the candidate engaged through notice periods, and stay involved through the early weeks of onboarding.
What a specialist partner adds to design hiring
The case for a specialist recruitment agency over an internal-only process is strongest in disciplines where surface signals mislead, and design is one of them. Product design and user experience talent is largely passive, dispersed across creative agencies, in-house teams, and consultancies, and rarely reachable through job postings alone. A structured search gives you access to that market, an independent read on each candidate, and a process your interviewers can trust.
Client service in our model means transparency throughout the search. We report clearly on progress, give direct market feedback when a role is mispriced or mis-scoped, and present shortlists where every candidate has a documented rationale. We would rather present three candidates worth interviewing than ten who fill a tracker.
Frequently asked questions
What seniority levels do you recruit in design?
Our scope is senior individual contributors, managers, and executives. That covers senior product designers, lead and principal designers, senior UX researchers, design managers, and leadership roles up to VP of Design and C-level.
Do you handle UX research and product design separately?
Yes. UX research and product design are distinct disciplines with different assessment criteria, and we screen each against the standards of its own field. We do not treat them as interchangeable.
What engagement models are available?
Design searches run as retained or contingent permanent recruitment, with executive search engagements for design leadership. We agree on the model and terms at scoping, based on the seniority and confidentiality of the role.
Can you help us define the role before we hire?
Yes. Scoping is part of every engagement, and it includes calibrating seniority, defining responsibilities, and shaping a job description that will attract the right candidates in the current market.
